Business website must-haves

At WordRight, I do more than just copywriting, SEO and social media marketing services. I work very closely with Woodswork who design and build beautiful websites. I choose them because their work is professional and affordable and will reflect your business, your products or services you provide.

Promoting your business is our business, and together, we use the power of the internet to help you grow.

Now, I’m guessing you have read similar kinds of ‘blurbs’ on the websites of many Auckland web designers and copywriters, so I thought I’d share what we regard as key elements when it comes to good business websites, because not all web development teams are created equal. If you want to find out more, get in touch.

Good business websites need these elements

Must-have # 1:

You want a site you can update easily, yourself. You also want a website with cool features and applications that work, are safe and get updated regularly.

To get all this you need a content management system for your website, such as WordPress. Why? Because you benefit from the thousands of development hours others have put into building it, for free. If built from scratch, the cool apps, plugins and layout features you’ll need for your site would cost the earth. The money you spend on web design is much better spent on content and an eye-catching site, not the invisible infrastructure to make it all work.

You also want to be able to make changes yourself: not have to pay your website designer to make small tweaks to the wording.

Must-have # 2:

Fast-loading sites work.

Don’t bother with flashy graphics, enormous images, huge sliders and revolving images. Yes, they may look cool, but if your site is graphics intensive, it might not load quickly and it may be not work well on a mobile phone. As a general rule of thumb, the more images you have then the time your site takes to load increases and Google doesn’t like slow loading sites. Having a graphics-heavy site can affect your site’s ability to get a good ranking in Google.

Google just loves words, the more the merrier.

You may have heard that a picture paints a thousand words, but when it comes to the Internet, it doesn’t quite work that way. Google can’t read images, nor can it read text contained in an image. And if Google cannot read them, then it can’t help you get found in a search. All wording on your site should be text and not some image containing the text.

Must-have # 4:

When it comes to Google rankings, content is crucial.

Anybody who allows you to believe good business websites don’t need web copy is being disingenuous. Good business websites are those with well-organised, well-structured written content and clear calls to action. But there is more to it than just writing great copy, putting it up on your new website, and walking away. You need to keep posting new and engaging copy, blog posts, or landing pages: whichever works best for your site and your business. The easiest way to do this? Through my copywriting services and a WordPress site by Woodswork Web.

Must-have # 5:

Training or a hands-on demonstration of the content management system.

Make sure you know how to drive your site, after all, it is yours. You need to know you’ll be able to use it and it fits with what you want to do with your business. Woodswork Web provides training so you can learn to use and edit your Divi WordPress site quickly and easily. Through their website, you’ll also have access to tutorials containing short videos and text notes 24/7.

These are my 5 essentials when it comes to small business websites. They have been time-tested and proven to work for our customers, which is why we include them in every site we create.  Woodswork Limited is no fly-by-night website company. They have been in business since 1999 and have built websites for Auckland-based multinational enterprises through to Warkworth businesses and Matakana garage start-ups. Together, we create very good business websites from North Auckland out to the world.
